I'd want to put that 'weird knowledge increased' but wasn't that just common sense? Vaseline is petroleum-based jelly, meaning it's oily. You don't put oil on your mucosal membranes, especially inside your body.

None of that sounds like common sense. Common sense requires a basic knowledge of all relevant topics. The average person barely understands basic functions of their own body, much less the physical properties of a petroleum-based jelly, and the effects those could have on various parts of the human body.

The real common sense would be "Don't put stuff on or in sensitive parts of your body before researching the safety concerns of said stuff." Which is unfortunately also a common sense most people lack.

This should be a PSA, because I heard vaseline being memed as the go-to for anal stuff so often that if I were to actually do it and not have time to research, I'd probably try to use it.

To correct some misconceptions, the reason people are told not to use Vaseline (petroleum jelly) as a lube doesn't have anything to do with your body: it's because it (and other oil-based lubricants, including those based on animal or vegetable oils) can break down condoms, making them useless for preventing pregnancy or STDs. You also don't want to use oil-based lubricants with rubber or plastic sex toys for the same reason, and don't use silicone-based lubricants with silicone toys, either.
